Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know which presser feet will fit my specific Janome machine model?

Janome makes it easy to determine compatibility. First, check your machine’s manual, which will list compatible feet. Second, know your machine’s maximum stitch width (e.g., 9mm, 7mm, or 5mm), as feet are categorized this way. Most modern Janome machines use snap-on feet, but you should always confirm the stitch width and shank type (high or low) before purchasing. Product descriptions will list compatible models or categories.

2. What is a walking foot and why is it essential for quilters?

A walking foot, also known as an even-feed foot, has a set of feed dogs built into the foot itself. This allows it to grip and pull the top layer of your fabric through the machine at the same rate as the machine’s feed dogs are pulling the bottom layer. This is essential for quilting as it prevents the layers of your “quilt sandwich” (top, batting, and backing) from shifting and puckering, resulting in beautifully flat, professional quilting. It’s also fantastic for matching plaids and sewing on slippery or knit fabrics.

3. What is the difference between a standard Zipper Foot (E) and an Invisible Zipper Foot (Z)?

A standard Zipper Foot (E) is designed to let you stitch very close to the teeth of a conventional zipper on either the left or right side. An Invisible Zipper Foot (Z) is a specialty foot with two small grooves on its underside. These grooves hold the coils of an invisible zipper open, allowing you to stitch directly and precisely in the ditch behind the coil, making the zipper truly disappear into the seam.

4. Besides quilting and zippers, what are some other “must-have” Janome feet?

For garment sewers, the Automatic Buttonhole Foot (R) creates perfectly sized, consistent buttonholes every time, and the Blind Hem Foot (G) helps you create invisible hems on skirts and trousers. For decorative work, a Satin Stitch Foot (F) has a groove on the bottom that allows dense decorative stitches to pass under it without getting flattened or jammed. These feet are often included in our curated presser foot kits, which offer great value.
