Join Certified Instructor, Jan Mathews for a fun and exciting Technique of the Month featuring Judy Niemeyer’s Coral Reef! The Coral Reef TOM has got to be the easiest design to assemble of all Judy Niemeyer’s patterns to date. If you are new to paper piecing, Judy Niemeyer’s patterns are a great introduction – they are engineered to work no matter your skill set (fairly new to quilting or a “multiple decade” quilter). If you are a confident beginner you can make this exceptional quilt top. If you are a veteran quilter, you will definitely appreciate the “little things” Judy has included in the assembly process for Coral Reef.
This class is a seven session class with between class time to sew and prep for the next class. By working between classes, you will be in a great position to complete a final quilt top on the last day of class. Kathy has been a quilter for more than 33 years with experience in hand quilting, machine piecing, machine applique, paper piecing, and the Accuquilt system. She has developed two Textile Ministries, taught classes and one on one lessons in quilt making and has her own Custom Quilt and Longarm Quilting business. The classes you experience at the Sewing and Vacuum Warehouse will provide beginner to advanced students with new and exciting skills in a positive and supportive atmosphere!
Using a jelly roll of fabric or 2 1/2 inch fabric strips, from the vast selection at Sewing and Vacuum Warehouse participants will create this quilt using a strip piecing method. Presslee, one of Kathy’s teen students, and Kathy will be teaching this two-day class which takes place from 10:30-1:30.
Participants must be in 6th grade (12 years old) and be able to sew a straight stitch on their sewing machine. Adults are welcome too.

Color is integral to a Quilter’s tool box. Join Jan Mathews for a fun and informative journey through color. Class will be from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break. Jan Mathews began teaching Color Theory at Houston International Quilt Festival in 2007 and continued every year until 2016. She continues to teach and study color at every opportunity and brings almost 20 years of information and color background specific to quilting to the classroom environment. If you want a playful and informative class in color with an emphasis on how to apply what you learn to fabric selection for your quilting project, this is a class you will want to take. Space is limited so reserve your spot. All current recommendations from the CDC will be observed.
Come to class with an attitude that will allow you to learn and play! There are no tests and no wrong answers so come prepared to enjoy yourself! (Fun is allowed, you know!)
What to Bring:
Color Journal (see Notes below)
Colored Pencils (sharpened and ready to color)

Paper and writing utensil (for notes)

Color Journal: Artist Sketch Book to a size not less than 6-1/2” x 9” to accommodates swatches. (Be reasonable – don’t bring in the HUGE sketch pads as you will then be imposing upon your neighbor – not to mention the difficulty with portability.)
Project: if you have a work in progress that you aren’t pleased with or want assistance selecting fabric for the next section, bring it. The class, as a whole, will benefit from walking through the process of figuring out what might be “off” and how to remedy your dissatisfaction. NO STRESS, NO JUDGMENT; friendly group discussion and fun learning experience. If you do not have an “in process” project, bring a pattern you want some ideas for fabric selection (and any fabric you are thinking about for it).
Books: Books on color are numerous!!! A recommended resource list will be circulated in class.
